How to Identify Wind Damage

The Importance of Inspecting Your Roof After a Storm

With hurricane season still underway and in the aftermath of Hurricane Zeta, it’s important to know what wind damage can do to your roof, how to identify it, and what you can do.

Hurricanes and storms can have devastating effects on our homes and we’re powerless to stop that, but we can implement preventative measures to reduce the damage and learn how to identify damage in the aftermath so that it can be effectively resolved. Here’s a quick guide to help you identify and manage wind damage to your home’s roof.

Curled or Missing Shingles

High wind speeds will most prominently affect the corners of your roof, and this can be identified by a curling of the corner shingles which have been blown out of shape by the wind. Shingles prevent water from seeping through the roof and causing water damage, so it’s important to address this issue immediately to prevent any severe issues.

Another sign of wind damage to your shingles is if there are patches of granules missing from the top of the shingle. You can usually find the missing granules in the gutters if they’ve been windswept.

Missing shingles are one of the most obvious signs of wind damage, and your roof is definitely liable for water damage if entire shingles are missing. A quick inspection of your roof after strong winds can make these signs easy to spot. If you identify either of these features, it’s best to call a roofer as soon as possible to minimize the damage.

Tears and Bubbles in Flat Roofs

Strong winds can lift up the material on flat roofs, causing it to either tear or leave bubbles. This, too, can compromise the integrity of your roof and lead to water damage.

The soffit and fascia below your gutters can also be subject to wind damage. You can identify this by cracked or loose areas, or entire parts of fascia can blow off.

Signs of Damage Indoors

Sometimes it can be possible to identify wind damage to your roof from inside your home. Most effects of wind damage will lead to potential water damage and leaking into your home, and so you may be able to spot the signs of this from inside.

Indoor water damage can look like damp or wet spots, discoloration, paint that’s begun to peel, and most obviously a dripping from the ceiling.

Call a Roofer Immediately

If you notice signs of wind damage or suspect that your roof may have some, call a roofer as soon as possible to perform an inspection and repair any damage. The damaging effects to your home will only get worse the longer you leave your roof unrepaired.
